Welcome to Mrs. Z's Blog on Short Stories and Poetry

We are ready to begin exploring different types of literature in English 9, and the best place to start is by introducing the short story form and literary terms that apply to all types of literature.  We will start the blog today, work on one short story and a poem written by the master of macabre, but then we will leave this blog for a while as we read William Shakespeare.  As time goes on in class, we will come back to this Short Stories and Poetry blog time and time again for information and activities.  Happy reading!

Literary Terms Powerpoint and Notes

Go to our class website today and click on "Powerpoints."  Find the powerpoint called "Short Stories."  Open in a new window and then save the powerpoint in your English folder and/or print to OneNote.  Read through the slide show with Mrs. Z. and take notes on terms and examples throughout lecture.

Now you are ready to apply these literary terms to the first short story that we will read as a class.

Edgar Allan Poe's Life and Works

Today, you will become an "expert" on an aspect of Edgar Allan Poe's life, works, and death.  Then, you will contribute your information in small groups during the next class.
  Here is your task:
1.  Select an article or Encarta site on Edgar Allan Poe (4 groups)
2. Write 10 interesting ideas or facts from your article in bulleted form in One Note or a Word Document.   Make sure that you spell things correctly. Save in your English folder and title it "Edgar Allan Poe."
3.  If appropriate, add an interesting image to your document to share with group.
4. Read what other students added and be ready to share/discuss your facts with the class.

Group 1 - "Poe Likely Dies of Rabies..."
Group 2 - "Monumentally Speaking..."
Group 3 - Historian Claims he started 'Poe Toasting."  This group should also go online and search for more information on "Poe Toasting" activity at Poe's grave and other interesting facts about Poe's grave and museum in Baltimore.
Group 4 - Go on Encarta on "Student Works" program, look up "Edgar Allan Poe" under Arts and Literature category.  Read the "Introduction" about Poe's life and write facts about his most famous poems and short stories.  What type of short story did he invent?
